Luster dust can be used on buttercream decorations to enhance the look and suddenly add a lot of glamor to the final preparation. Everyone wants to impress friends and family with Instagram-quality ready preparations. But there are a few detailed recommendations that we would like you to know beforehand. They will save you a lot of time and effort in the preparation and avoid all accidental disappointments. So here goes the list.

Luster dust is a safe and edible food product covering or coats food surfaces and adds sparkle using various colors. It is available in powder form, and it can be used to dust the surface and mixed with any liquid like water or butter to give that appealing high-sheen coating.

How To Make Luster Solution

  1. Take a little powder around one teaspoon in a small bowl.
  2. Add alcohol like vodka. The quantity should be only a few drops to make a paint and not a solution; the solution will run all over the preparation and spoil the look. Be very careful here. The final product must not be too thick. Else it will not spread quickly over the delicate surface of cakes, pastries, etc., where you plan to use them. It should not be too liquid; else, it won’t hold its own.
  3. Luster is not generally water-soluble. So you can use alcohol to mix it, or you can also dry brush the preparation. A solution in alcohol will only make it spread more evenly. Vodka is recommended as it does not alter the taste of the final practice. You will be using only 2-3 drops to make the solution. If you are not comfortable using the alcohol-based solution, use lemon extract.
  4. Send the preparation and the luster solution to the fridge for 30 minutes to ensure they are both cold enough to work with. You can skip this step. We just wanted you to be an extra bit careful.

Using Luster Dust

You can use a paintbrush or a cotton swab to paint luster dust on the surface gently you desire to coat and create your unique designs. You can also mix the solution with fondant, chocolate, frosting, icing, buttercream, molded candies, gum paste, flour, and candies to enhance its look. However, you may need an additional luster to mix with the ingredients. So start with a small quantity and work your way up until you get the desired effect. Ideally, use a stencil to help you with the design as there is no way to go back. You can also use an airbrush for a different effect the same way you use a paintbrush, just with a different design outcome.

While you can mix luster dust in buttercream, please avoid it as the luster will get lost in the buttercream. A coating gives a much better effect and will look magical, giving that fine metallic sheen you like.
