How to Make The Gold Color For The Icing?

This is the most crucial step in the entire process. The easiest way to do it is to pick up gold-colored icing in the store, which is already available from different brands. But many people want to be creative and make their version at home. Quite a few people also keep a variety of colors at home to try out new colors and shades.

To create the gold luster solution mix, the luster dust with a small but enough volume of vodka or lemon extract to make the solution. However, to make the gold, yellow solution in the first place, you will need to start with some shade of yellow like lemon or mustard. It’s important to note that all of them will end up with a slightly different shade of shimmering yellow gold in the end. So keep your expectations set that way. To avoid disappointment, we advise you to experiment a few times on a smaller scale to get some experience. We share below the different types of gold-based colors you can prepare:

  1. Golden Yellow mix – using yellow and red for golden yellow color: You can mix a little yellow and red coloring. Mix well to get the desired color. If red is not available, you can use orange, but you need to add more orange to compensate.
  2. Golden Yellow mix – using yellow, red, and green: When green is mixed with the combination in the above option, it gives an impression of an old version of gold. To make this one, follow the steps in Point No 1 to make the golden yellow mix. Then add a minimum quantity of green to get the effect of antique gold.
  3. Gold shimmer buttercream: The best and easiest method will be to use a readily available gold shimmer because it gives that distinct metallic glitter that is so desirable.
    1. You can dust the surface of the buttercream or use it as an ingredient during its preparation.
    2. Apart from dusting, you can also spray it over the preparation.
    3. You can also mix the gold shimmer with the methods explained in points no. 1 and 2.

This is all it takes to create your version of the gold color for the recipe. Since we are done with the gold-colored solution, let’s start with the actual recipe.

  • Unsalted butter
  • Finely powdered sugar
  • Gold luster or gold shimmer or gold color
  • Pure vanilla extract
  • Fresh cream
  • Table salt

  • Take the softened butter to a large bowl for mixing. Ensure the butter is soft enough for beating.
  • Beat the butter using a spoon, a whisk, or the best way will be using a mechanized mixer of some kind.
  • Let the butter process in the mixer and beat it until it becomes completely smooth.
  • Then slowly add the powdered sugar into the butter, careful not to create any lumps. Start this at a low-speed setting and then gradually increase the speed. This will take anywhere between1 – 2 minutes to combine thoroughly. Don't overdo this step.
  • Pour the heavy cream into the mix, slowly at a low-speed setting; else, it can splash too. So be careful. This will take 1 – 2 minutes to combine thoroughly.
  • Add the pure vanilla extract and salt to taste.
  • Let the mixing continue and scrape the sides of the bowl repeatedly during mixing to ensure the contents are thoroughly mixed.
  • Finally, use a toothpick to scrape a little gold icing from its container and rub it into the mix. Remix this well and see the color change. Depending on how dark or full a color you want, add more gold luster. But do not overdo it.
  • If you are using gold luster, ensure you mix it in 2 -3 drops of vodka or lemon extract to make a solution; else, it will form lumps and won't blend as effectively in the buttercream.
  • Once ready, you can use a container to decorate your cakes and confectionery.

  • Storage Instructions: This buttercream can easily last 2 – 3 days in the fridge in an air-tight container. So you can always prepare it in advance for use later. You can use it directly out of the refrigerator if it is not too hard.
  • Freezing Instructions: This buttercream will last 2 – 3 months in the freezer. You will need to thaw it outside at room temperature or leave it overnight in the fright. Ensure it’s at room temperature or slightly cold to use it, or it will cause crusting.
  • Heavy Cream: Heavy cream makes the preparation richer and thicker inconsistently. You can always replace it with milk, but try to use whole milk. But do remember that the final practice won’t be as creamy, as the buttercream is supposed to be in the first place.
